Outcome & Reflection
Lucerna & Obscura demonstrate the potential of salmon leather as a distinctive material for contemporary lighting. The finished lamps explore two contrasting approaches to form and illumination, highlighting the material's natural texture, translucency and versatility.
The project was exhibited alongside a collection of tanning and dyeing samples, an illustrated process booklet and supporting documentation. Presenting this development work alongside the finished lamps was an important part of communicating the research and experimentation involved.
The project brought together a wide range of skills, from material research and testing to product development, fabrication and visual communication. It also highlighted opportunities for further exploration, particularly around material consistency, durability and the practical considerations of working with naturally variable materials.
Looking ahead, I'm interested in refining the process further, exploring specialist material suppliers and developing the potential for salmon leather in lighting and other products. I see this project as a starting point for continued experimentation with materials and contemporary design.
