Lamp Fabrication
Both lamps combine handcrafted salmon leather panels with steel frames and turned yew wood bases, bringing together traditional making techniques and digital fabrication.
Lucerna was constructed using a hand shaped steel rod frame, designed to hold the naturally varying shapes of the salmon skins. Its open, scroll-like form allows light to pass through the translucent leather, highlighting five embroidered motifs that follow the length of the lamp and represent the story of the material..
Obscura takes a contrasting approach, using a geometric steel frame with six dyed salmon leather panels. Its enclosed design conceals the light source, revealing three embroidered spiral motifs when illuminated. The positioning of the internal supports and lighting components was carefully considered to achieve this effect.
Both lamps feature hand-turned yew wood bases, finished with Danish oil and beeswax to enhance the natural grain. The leather panels were individually cut and fitted to their frames, secured using hand-stitching with black waxed cotton thread. the Ainu-inspired symbolic motifs were produced using a CAD embroidery machine, combining digital precision with traditional textile techniques.
